The sunlight gleamed off the black and white chequered, polished marble surface. Reflecting light off the armies of soldiers that battled across the board at the whims of their master. A master who was capable of controlling the actions of Kings and Queens. A master who was capable of predicting his enemies every move. A master who saw through everything and enjoyed the pain he inflicted upon his enemies army. A Grandmaster.
Phoenix watched as the opponent before him stared at the board for three straight minutes before finally comprehending the obvious.
Phoenix allowed himself a superior half smile as he watched the young man before him reluctantly push his money forward, knocking over his own King in the process. A true defeat then, Phoenix thought to himself. Glancing, once again, over the remnants of his first game of the day, Phoenix was disappointed that he had been forced to go easy on the pitiful specimen that had already vacated the seat before Phoenix and was proceeding towards the exit. Phoenix collected both the white and black pieces from the board and reorganised them for a new game.
Whilst reassembling the pieces in their correct order across both sides of the board, a stranger approached the table. Within the eye of the stranger was a glint of courage and intelligence; however, his gait denoted an excess of confidence. Phoenix had already decided that he would crush the man before him.
Phoenix sighed quietly to himself. This was going to be extremely boring.
The arrogant young man simply placed himself before the table. Phoenix took this as his answer and without any preamble opened with a classic pawn to E4 move. Phoenix looked up from the board with a bored expression easily visible across his visage. Without any consideration or thought towards Phoenix’s move, the opposition opened by moving his pawn to B6.
Phoenix gladly mocked the ignorant stranger. It helped to alleviate his boredom, if only for a few moments. Analysing every possible outcome of his following strategies in conjunction with the data Phoenix had gathered about the stranger seated before him, Phoenix concluded that the deployment of Queenside bishop was the most probable outcome. Phoenix considered that his opposition no doubt thought that this would be an unpredictable move and would therefore make him look smart, however, by being determinedly unpredictable he became predictable and made Phoenix’s boring job even less entertaining. Pre-empting his opponents strategies and tactics made defence almost too easy. Countering with a simple pawn to D4 move, Phoenix cleared up a central route for his more useful pieces whilst maintaining his King’s protection.
Phoenix simply stared through his opponent and spoke, once again, in a mocking tone.
The opponent moved his hand from his side confidently and unfazed, placing his fingers atop the Queenside bishop and proceeded to move it, as predicted, to B7. By doing this all scepticisms and estimates relating to this man’s abilities and personality were fortified into solid facts within that manoeuvre. He was stupid, impatient, arrogant and greedy. Phoenix almost felt something akin to pity for him… almost.

“Truly an arrogant move, easily predictable and stupid. Somehow, you manage to make this look easy.

“What kind of move do you think that is?”
Phoenix simply stared through his opponent and spoke, once again, in a mocking tone.
“Your arrogance will be your downfall.
