Mental Information
Personality: Sam is a very spunky, energetic person, and a very hard worker – as long as what she’s working on can hold her interest long enough.
She’s a smart girl, and pretty well able to figure out what role she has to play to get on a person’s good side. She takes after her gentle mother more than her militaristic father, though, much to his irritation. She’s not very easily angered, but when she is, watch out. For the most part, she doesn’t get angry on behalf of herself; she gets angry on account of someone she cares about. And yet, she’s not an overly vengeful person. Sam is incredibly loyal, but she takes a while to open up to someone, and so people tend to think her shy at first, when in reality she’s just a bit guarded. When she does open up, however, she opens completely, and heaven help you if you do anything to destroy that because you’ll probably never get it back.
Sam used to be a perfect tomboy in an attempt to please her father, who had originally wanted a son, but soon enough found a balance between boyishness and femininity. She’s learned how to play up both sides in order to convince whom she needs to that she’s a person that you want to be around. Or stay away from, depending on how she feels towards you that that point.
Likes: Ice cream, electric blankets, pointe shoes, music, tap dancers, sarcasm
Dislikes: Homework, coffee, being late, losing, football, assholes
Mentality/Ideal/Belief: Do what you love. Love what you do.
Physical Information
Build: Slender and strong. A dancer’s body.
Defining Marks: Nothing noticeable.
Description: Sam is tall and skinny, but strong. She has medium length brown, naturally highlighted hair that falls a few inches beyond her shoulders when she leaves it straight, and green-hazel eyes. For a typical school day, jeans and a cute t-shirt are enough to satisfy her, and they make a leotard and tights disappear underneath pretty easily, but some days she’ll put on a skirt and some makeup, and maybe style her hair differently - just because she can. Also, Sam likes hats. She’s got plenty of different kinds for plenty of different occasions, and she takes a lot of opportunities to wear them when she can. Usually she leaves her hair down (she knows what looks good on her), but if she’s got a dance class that she’s trying to rush to or from, then she slicks it completely back into a tight bun at the back of her head, usually with some kind of colorful or decorative bun cover. She developed amazing posture from all of her dance training, but she also got herself some butt-ugly toes from dancing en pointe for so long.
Fighting Information
Fighting Style: Aikido
Years Practiced: 3 years
Description of style: “Aikido is considered to be a non-aggressive style, as the Aikido student does not instigate the attack. The basic principle of Aikido is “Do not fight force with force”. Aikido uses very few punches and kicks. Instead, the attackers force is redirected into throws, locks and restraining techniques. Size, weight, age and physical strength differences of the opponents play only a small role, as the skilled Aikido practitioner is able to redirect the attackers energy, keeping his attacker in a constant of unbalance.”

Sam takes the knowledge of Aikido and combines it with the dexterity of her dance training to create a graceful, mainly defensive style that may not involve a lot of real technique, but then Sam uses her training for self-defense more than anything else.
Overall Strengths: Sam’s dance training gives her some edge here – the discipline, strength and speed developed in dance carry over to other parts of life as well – for instance, street fighting. Sam is incredibly in tune with her body, which means she can use it to it’s fullest potential in a fight. Her flexibility and the tolerance for pain that most dancers also seem to develop help her to pull herself out of tight situations, and to take a hit pretty solidly.
Overall Weaknesses: Because Sam is such a defensive fighter, it’s very hard for her to think OFFensively. This causes her to miss openings that could easily win her the fight – either miss them altogether, or purposely not taking them for fear of doing too much damage. Her training has all dealt with sparring in her studio, and she’s never been in a situation where the stakes were higher than a pat on the back and a congratulations.
History Information
History: Sam was born to Vincente and Ella Ballerino. Both of her parents love her very much, though they have far different ways of showing it. Ella is every bit the caring mother, doting on her daughter (yet managing to not spoil her rotten), while Vincente, who had originally wanted a boy, treats her with a rigorously militaristic authority.
When she was four years old, after months of arguing, her mother put her foot down, and convinced her husband to put Sam in some dance classes. Sam and her father resisted at first; Sam had become quite the tomboy in a vain attempt to please her father, and he didn’t want any child of his to be a sissy in a tutu. But soon her dancing became the thing she enjoyed most in her life. By the time she got to seventh grade she was ditching school in order to take a couple extra classes at her studio, telling the school administrators she had a job. This setup worked out in her favor until eighth grade when her class counselor called home to discuss Sam's graduation. In order to make time for the ballet classes she wanted, she hadn't signed up for all the classes at school she needed before she could graduate. Better not take the class at all than take it and never attend...
The counselor told her parents that if Sam didn't quit her "job" and start going to school full-time again, she wouldn't be able to graduate on time.
Neither of Sam's parents took particularly well to this news, and afterwards, her life became a living hell. After a brutal shouting match between her and her father, Ella came in and gently told her that she’d messed up. She’d messed up bad. Quietly, Sam took the news that she’d have to drop most of her classes not only to go back to school, but also to begin a series of martial arts lessons. Sam’s life slowly became a living hell as her father took over every aspect of her life. Vincente decided which classes she would take, which meant that she had nothing but academic courses, and accelerated learning classes whenever they were available. Immediately after school every day she was sent off to the Aikido studio that her father had picked out for her to attend, telling her all the while to consider herself lucky that he’d at least allowed her to choose the style of martial arts she wanted to learn (though she didn’t know that that was her mother’s doing). She tried skipping out on it at first, but after learning the hard way that her instructor contacted her parents whenever she was late or absent, she gave it up and began actually putting effort into her training.
As one of her attempts to rebel, Sam abandoned her tomboyish nature and began wearing makeup and feminine attire on a more regular basis, and dating boys. She’d always been a closet romantic, but was sorely disappointed in the shallow personalities that seemed to be all she could find. And, as this behavior had about as much affect on her father as her tomboyishness, and she soon gave it up, finding a solid balance between the two.
A few years later, as a sophomore in high school, her father came to the studio to watch her spar. He told her afterwards that he didn’t think she was aggressive enough, and as much as she tried to explain that Aikido was a very defensive and non-aggressive style, he insisted on doing something to “fix the problem.”
A couple of days later Sam was informed that she would no longer be attending Chateau High, but would be transferring a couple hundred miles to Public High School #42 in San Fransisco for her junior and senior years. The area had a reputation for gang activity, and the school utilized the traditionally violent Pillar System. Her father thought it was a great opportunity to toughen his daughter up – Sam thought it was a great opportunity for a murder called suicide.
Her mother told her that they were going to find her a place to live closer to the school, to give her a chance to prove her responsibility to her father. “I also figured you might be able to use a little time away from him,” she added with a knowing smile.
Soon after moving to Moral Crest High, though, Sam was given a chance-of-a-lifetime dance scholarship audition to a studio in San Diego. Since she'd been doing well at PHS 42, her parents allowed her to pick up and move there for the month-long evaluation process.
