Not sure whether this has been addressed or not but I was thinking about those cool items that have levels. Now if each level were monitored and placed against your rank (1 star 2 star etc) as your character grows and ranks up so does your item.
Now this is just me playing with ideas.
So it's completely unorganized but I'm just going to through some things around. Btw my inspiration is One piece xD

List of some things that I've been playing around with in my head
- One special item per person (character)
- Each item is unique to that character
- To gain the first item you have to do like a huge character milestone (partake in a major quest, join a gang something memorable and awesome)
- The item ranks up with you as you progress through your characters story and post counts
- Signature moves and effects can be linked with the item
- Cannot be sold, traded nor upgraded by buying exp or materials from the item store
- The name and effects can be subject to change therefore writing a detailed plan about each level is not applicable.
- They can in certain circumstances be lost or taken for example if your character were near death it could be worked out to lose your item or for it to temporarily be stripped as it changes into a new item.
- The item should reflect your character, those characters with multiple split personalities could have an item that switches faces (each face would be weaker than those with two or one yet the item would have different effects.
- There will be a strict (extremely strict) criteria for level ups this is going from tier 0 to tier 1 and so forth.
- There will be a points system certain acts will gain the user a certain amount of points on the whole for example a fight that’s two pages long and of certain quality is worth .5 of a point where’s three pages is worth .15 and 5 is worth a massive .25 making it worth more to stick in there and produce some quality fights or character development.
- Depending on the type of item the points will be awarded differently. For example those who are brawly types of characters will be more inclined to the brawling arts, those who are thinkers the thinking arts (solving puzzles, mazes, Assessing qi's and character strengths, boosts to wis and int), leaders, leading (huge cha and some all round boosts once again subject to change for example using harry potter as an example, Gryffindor type characters would be leading type yeah, but also physical bonus') and artists their art (musicians, Actors, painters, sculptors etc).
- Musicians could give allies bonus' and enemies stuns etc sort of like the bards from Dragon Age.
- Leaders could also give willpower bonus's makig it more likely for allies to shrug off fatigue or attacks.
- Obivously everything has it's opposites I'm sure if these items went through they would be balanced.
